NEW YORK (Reuters) – World stocks and oil prices fell on Thursday on concerns about the health of Spain’s banks and the prospect of Greece leaving the euro zone.

Adding to pressure on Wall Street stocks was a U.S. government report showing manufacturing in the mid-Atlantic states unexpectedly contracted in May.

The data helped lift safe-haven U.S. Treasuries prices, and pushed the 10-year note yield to just 5 basis points from its lowest level in at least 50 years, while gold prices rallied 2.6 percent.

Worries about Spanish banks resurfaced after a media report said customers of Bankia <bkia.mc> had withdrawn more than 1 billion euros from their accounts in the past week. The Spanish government said there had been no such exit of deposits.</bkia.mc>

Shares of the partly nationalized Bankia fell 13.5 percent but recovered some of the losses after the government’s denial.

The developments in Spain followed reports that customers of Greek banks were moving funds on the belief the country would exit the euro, adding to broader anxiety about the region’s debt crisis.

“The whole equities market is being driven by a macro trade based upon contagion fear in Europe, and really the problem is undercapitalized banks there,” said Jack de Gan, chief investment officer at Harbor Advisory Corp in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.

Global shares, as measured by MSCI’s world equity index <.miwd00000pus>, declined 0.6 percent, and were set for a fifth day of losses along with U.S. stocks.</.miwd00000pus>

The Dow Jones industrial average <.dji> was down 81.32 points, or 0.65 percent, at 12,517.23. The Standard & Poor’s 500 Index <.spx> was down 10.85 points, or 0.82 percent, at 1,313.95. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.ixic> was down 42.57 points, or 1.48 percent, at 2,831.47.</.ixic></.spx></.dji>

The pan-European FTSE 300 index <.fteu3> dropped 1.2 percent, a fourth straight day of declines.</.fteu3>

Brent crude futures extended losses to more than $2 a barrel on concerns about Greece and the wider euro zone. Brent July crude was down $2.33 at $107.42 a barrel, having fallen to $107.26, the low for the year.

“The oil market, like other risky assets, is within the grips of uncertainty surrounding the euro zone,” said Harry Tchilinguirian, BNP Paribas head of commodities strategy.

Investors followed the heated political debate in Athens, where opponents of harsh austerity measures to obtain an international bailout are expected to win new elections in June.

The euro earlier dropped to $1.2665, its lowest level since mid-January, past stop-loss sell orders below $1.2680 and on course for a test of its 2012 low of $1.2623, according to Reuters data. It last traded at $1.2722, up 0.1 percent.

The yen, though, posted sharp gains against the euro and dollar, bolstered by safety bids.

In the U.S. Treasury market, the benchmark 10-year Treasury note was up 16/32, its yield easing to 1.70 percent, – just 5 basis points from its lowest level in at least 50 years.

Gold prices also rose, with spot gold registering its largest one-day gain since late January.

Spot gold bounced to an intraday high of $1,579.70 and was last up 2.36 percent at $1,575.5 per ounce. That is up almost $50 since it plunged to December lows around $1,527 on Wednesday.

ScienceDaily (May 18, 2012) ? NASA technologists will get a chance next summer to relive the good old days when Agency engineers would affix space-age gizmos to rockets just to see if the contraptions worked.

In what will be the first of four high-altitude balloon flights to begin in the summer of 2013, technologists at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, Calif., and Wallops Flight Facility in Wallops Island, Va., are preparing to test new deceleration devices that could replace current descent technologies for landing ever-larger payloads at higher elevations on Mars.

NASA hasn’t tested deceleration technologies supersonically since 1972 when it conducted four high-altitude tests of a supersonic parachute used during the Viking program. “We’ve been stuck with that design ever since,” said Mark Adler, NASA’s Low-Density Supersonic Decelerator (LDSD) program lead. NASA will use the same technology again this year when it delivers the Curiosity rover to Mars.

However, planetary landers of tomorrow will require much larger drag devices than any now in use. “What we need is new technology to slow larger, heavier landers from the supersonic speeds of atmospheric entry to subsonic ground-approach speeds,” Adler said.

The LDSD program is aimed at giving NASA a new and improved capability. Funded by NASA’s Space Technology Program, the JPL-led team plans to conduct full-scale, stratospheric tests of three potentially breakthrough technologies. The aim is to raise their technology-readiness levels to about six, which means they could be used in a flight project, perhaps as early as 2018.

The first two are supersonic inflatable decelerators, large pressure vessels that inflate around an entry vehicle and slow it from Mach 3.5 or faster to about Mach 2. One of these inflatable devices measures nearly 20 feet in diameter (six meters), the other nearly 26 feet (eight meters). The third technology is a 110-foot (33.5-meter) parachute to further slow the entry vehicle from Mach 2 to subsonic speeds needed for a safe landing. All three would be the largest devices of their kind ever flown at speeds several times greater than the speed of sound.

The design calls for the team to attach a test vehicle equipped with the decelerator and parachute to a Wallops-provided high-altitude balloon. Once the balloon reaches an altitude of about 22 miles (36 kilometers) above Earth’s surface, the rocket would fire its engines and carry the test vehicle to Martian atmospheric densities at an altitude of 31 miles (50 kilometers) at Mach 4. There, the test vehicle would deploy the supersonic decelerator, followed by the parachute.

Perfect Marriage of Capabilities

The project leverages the strengths of both organizations, said Scott Schaire, Wallops LDSD acting project manager. While NASA JPL and its contractors are developing the test vehicle, decelerators, and parachute, NASA Wallops is responsible for balloon operations, balloon instrumentation, and other operations associated with balloon launches.

One significant NASA Wallops-provided technology is an entirely new balloon launch system — an effort Schaire’s team undertook specifically for the supersonic tests. With this new system, the test vehicle will be suspended from a vertical, 80-foot tower. Its job is preventing the test vehicle from hitting the ground as the balloon begins to lift off. A modified apparatus that resembles a farm-irrigation system will help technicians lay out the balloon and a new spool vehicle will hold the balloon until launch.

In the first test as early as August 2013, the team plans to evaluate the performance of both the decelerator and parachute. “Launching small rockets from large balloons,” Schaire said. “What could be a better project for Wallops?”

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio (CBS Cleveland) ? A Catholic university in Ohio is ending its student health insurance program due to President Obama?s health care law.

Franciscan University says the costs under the health care law are just too great to sustain the program.

?The Obama Administration has mandated that all health insurance plans must cover ?women?s health services? including contraception, sterilization, and abortion-causing medications as part of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA),? a statement on the university?s website said. ?Up to this time, Franciscan University has specifically excluded these services and products from its student health insurance policy, and we will not participate in a plan that requires us to violate the consistent teachings of the Catholic Church on the sacredness of human life.?

Vice President of Advancement Mike Hernon told the Wheeling News-Register that it was a ?painful? decision to make.

?The two factors that are driving our decision are the freedom of religion and the economics,? Hernon told the News-Register. ?We don?t feel it?s fair to pass that cost on to our students.?

With the health care law mandating the maximum coverage amount for student policies to $100,000 for the next school year, university officials said it would have had to double the student?s premium cost for the policy this fall.

University spokesman Tom Sofio told the News-Register that the policy could cost $500,000 come the 2013-2014 school year.

The Supreme Court will make a ruling sometime this summer about the constitutionality of the president?s health care law.

Busy nine-to-fivers have schedules that don?t leave much wiggle room for anything but work. Getting wrapped up in a project often leads to skipped snacks and meals. A growling stomach, headache, and fuzzy brain make you realize you should have eaten lunch an hour ago, and since you?re famished, you reach for the first (and probably not-so-healthy) food you can get your hungry hands on. Prevent work weight gain and keep your productivity levels high by setting up a schedule for snacks and meals. After having breakfast at home, here?s a basic schedule you can follow once you reach the office. 9:30: Morning snack 12:00: Lunch 3:30: Afternoon snack Be sure to eat breakfast a couple hours before your morning snack and dinner a couple hours after your afternoon snack. Adjust the schedule to meet your needs and stick to it. (It may help to set up reminders on your computer or phone so you don?t forget.) Before heading to work, prepare healthy snacks -?like these 150-calorie DIY snack packs ? and lunches -here are some tasty vegetarian sandwiches ? so you can avoid grabbing greasy fast food or that homemade brownie your co-worker brought in. An eating schedule may seem a little too rigid (or like you?re back in elementary school), but planning ahead is the best way to keep you on the healthy eating path. I have a background in archaeology and constantly feel the need to correct people about various aspects of cultural history or certain traditions. I don’t have an ego per say, and that is something more of an itch than anything. I’m not sure how else to describe it. It’s an itch that has to be scratched. I never want to show anyone up. That’s not my goal at all.

Recently someone energetically referred me to this article on how studying martial arts can be helpful in the treatment of autism. My initial reactions were that it was an extremely broad statement and lacked supporting evidence. However, the individual in question was very excited and believed it could help me focus and deal with my necessary stimming motions. Stimming motions and such are a serious problem for me.

I lack coordination and realize this would be a huge barrier to beginning any study like this. I also realize, however, that it could also be a step in the right direction to dealing with the lack of coordination that I grapple with. Naturally, that’s directly connected to my diagnosis of autism and comorbid conditions. I would give anything to experience improvement in that area.

After doing a little searching on Wrongplanet, I’ve found other people even share my concerns about the commercialization of martial arts. Does anyone have any advice for me? I’m worried that I would never be able to get over the fact that each individual historical convention of just about everything isn’t followed. To be honest, I’d like to be able to eventually get over my powerful debilitating obsessions.

Naturally, I don’t function well without a schedule and can’t function in social areas or classrooms either. I suppose in some respects I’m even only considering the idea out of loyalty to the individual that brought it up. I’m wondering, though, if I’d be able to get some benefit out of a particularly classical, internal school of martial arts. For instance, if I were able to find a correctly taught T’ai Chi Ch’uan class with an understanding instructor I think I would be able to maybe function properly. I actually have a bit of a background in Ch’uan.

I have been building up a timetable or schedule, which started off as a “mere” 10 minutes per day last October/November, 10 minutes which were a struggle to maintain, but we succeeded, and which is now between 30-45 minutes twice a day, ( plus a walk, weather permitting ).

We have been using a mixture of “Core” exercises, upper body/arm etc exercises with weights, regular cardio/aerobics, plus some yoga and callanetics stretching and flexibility routines. The “Core” stuff ( also often described a “bodyweight” exercises ) is interesting, especially as it turns out that it’s pretty much what yoga has been doing for a century or more, ( only much more slowly :lol ), and seems to be the most important part of all strength training and “control of the body”, etc.

At one point we were using some MMA/Mixed Martial Arts workouts, as a kind of cardio exercise mainly, ( though my son loved the whole boxing/kickboxing/combat aspect of it ), but we both began to find the presenters either depressingly “heavy”/earnest/severe/driven or simply silly, ( and in the case of one sensible workout it sadly went from being free to pay-to-view ).

The advantage of using online videos though is that you can customise, stop and start, pause, repeat, cut short, file away for a while, mix with others according to one’s levels of competence/fitness etc, and do it whenever you are free, ( as well as laugh and gasp and chat unrestrictedly :lol ).

I started a thread here a while back about the videos we’ve been using, which might help to give you some idea of what’s available. I’ll just go get the link. I suspect that you would be able to find some MA workouts online by presenters/trainers who take historical conventions/accuracy etc very seriously.

I take Aikido at a dojo associated with the US Aikido Federation (USAF- part of the Aikikai Foundation still headquartered in Japan by the founder’s family). I enjoy Aikido because most of the historical traditions are followed, although the art itself was only really developed in the 1930′s in Japan.

The most important thing for me is that it is a non-competitive art, every thing is practiced in partners, most of it is learned at your own pace, and there is no sparing (this decreasing your chances of injury. Not sparing is important to me because I do not react quickly to an unexpected object moving towards my face. Most people will at least flinch when you move your hand to their face quickly, I do not respond, thus increasing the likelihood that I will be hit. Although in the upper belts a free form is practiced for testing (but not regular classes) called randori when two to four people act as attackers at one time against the person being tested – this allows the person being tested to show the variety of techniques they know.

Another wonderful thing for me is that practice is very structured, and the rules are spelled out. This means I know exactly how to behave at all times, and how to act to the different people in the dojo – my sensei, and my senpai (older student). Most classes I also get in a good cardio workout, so I count the three times I go each week as my weekly exercise.

In daily practice everything is practiced in two person kata (predefined form) with one person giving a predetermined attack (the uke), and the other person receiving and redirecting the attack as part of a defense (the nage). There is nothing left to guess work in any part of practice. We also practice with wooden weapons sometimes and that is fun too.

My sensei knows that I have AS, and need to have instructions ‘spelled out’ in detail. He, and my other classmates are very understanding if it takes me a few extra times to learn a technique, or if I need extra instruction on the details of the technique. They are also understanding if I get sensory overload. I can leave the mat at anytime if I become over whellmed and need a break, or if the neighbors are blasting the bass on the radio, and it is very disturbing to me, I can put in some soft earplugs during class.
_________________
__ /(. . )

Well you might be in trouble with your need for historical accuracy…
I have done karate in two different clubs, slightly different styles. And there is no such thing as historical accuracy although everyone claims it. Karate has history (and today and future) very similar to church history, where everyone claims to have the truth and continuity and labels everyone else as heretic. I just tried to ignore it, and found a club where there was less talk and more actual excercise and where I personally liked the style better.

Karate helped me develop a huge amount of social skills. Just handling the closeness and attention of a partner and keeping your attention on him was something I don’t do voluntairly and therefore practicing it made me better at handling people. But – that was before I self-diagnosed myself as an aspie. After that I gradually came to better terms with myself, lost the need to constantly change myself to compete with others in every field and then I lost the motivation to put myself through such torture what a training with partner embodies. Haven’t been to a lesson for long time already.

My new obsession is gym. And surprisingly this has brought some noticeable improvement in balance and also I somewhat feel more in control of my movements though I havent tested it yet in anything challenging. I’m starting to think that any kind of excercise can improve balance and coordination.

I think you should simply choose something that you can do with pleasure (enjoyable process or due to feeling of pride).

For personal reasons, the issue of martial arts is a very sore one. When I was a little boy my grandmother tried to force me into a karate class as a way to correct my self-esteem problems. I didn’t function right and refused to go. We now understand that was due to mental conditions diagnosed much later. Naturally, my self-esteem then as now was extremely poor.

My grandmother since passed away, and I have a complex where I look back on the situation and am overcome with guilt. I’m sure it has something to do with grieving. I’m subconsciously rationalizing that if I had just succeeded like she wanted me to I would have her still with me. That’s not the case, of course, but I’m sure we all understand the way the mind works.

That being said, I’m actually in the best shape of my life for entirely different reasons. I lost a lot of weight running. In fact, I wrote on Wrongplanet before about how I’m actually considerably underweight. I’ve gone to the other albeit equally unhealthy extreme. I wasn’t looking at martial arts as a way to get fit. Instead, it just seems that a friend’s otherwise well-meaning intentions set off a trigger. So now I’m feeling guilty about the whole thing.

Ounion, I never would have thought about looking for serious programs online. I’m certain it isn’t difficult at all to tell great stuff apart from the junk. Do you believe I should look at things like that? While I still wouldn’t be working on anything social, the idea seems really promising from a balance and coordination point of view.

Nebrets, your words certainly gave me a bit of hope. I’m very familiar with Aikido from a historian’s perspective. Ueshiba Morihei-sensei’s are more admirable than many in the field of modern martial arts, and he never attempted to explicitly claim that he was resurrecting any particular theories from the past. Moreover, he was greatly influenced by Omoto-kyo philosophy.

As a gentle aside, I would prefer to ignore any negativity towards religious doctrine for the time being if that were possible.
